Thrift Shopping

I adore second-hand stores so much that I decided to write about it, so these are my experiences and lessons-learned shopping at second-hand, thrift and consignment shops.

Maternity Clothing Meltdowns
IMG_0139

Since I got knocked up, I have not been able to enjoy the second-hand stores like I used to. Up until Month 4 or 5 in my pregnancy, my pants stopped fitting and my shirts started to get tighter. Oh, the joys of pregnancy were just getting started. I tried all attempts to find maternity clothes in thrift stores, but [...]

Shopping the Salva in Downtown Conway
photo (12)

I ventured into the new location of The Salvation Army Family Store in Conway finally. I’ve been wanting to shop there since they moved in, but now that they are well settled, I figured now was the best time. One of my students calls it “Salva” for short because she doesn’t like saying she’s shopping at The Salvation Army. It [...]

thredUP is a bit of a let down
ThredUp

So since we found out that we are having a boy, I have been unloading all of my daughter’s clothes. I’ve taken the traditional route of donating clothes to my cousin, who is expecting a girl this December and even donated several bags to the local Goodwill. I also have a small pile to sell to a local second-hand store. [...]

Spreading Goodwill and Sustainability
goodwill

I have dropped off some hideous clothes to Goodwill many times and honestly, I can’t imagine anyone actually wearing them. Then when I find that wild hair and decide to clean out my mixed assortment of kitchenware, I donate those random items too. However, as the phrase goes, one man’s trash is another’s treasure. So what happens to these clothes [...]

Thrift store numbers don’t lie
thriftfeature

If you’ve never been to a resale shop, then you really should consider the personal and economic benefits of this emerging industry. Ours may be considered a throwaway society, especially when it comes to clothes: You buy the newest fashion today and then tomorrow, you get rid of it simply because it has gone out of style. However, clothes are [...]

Thrift stores must survive cycles
twicenicefeature

Have you ever donated anything from your closet? If you haven’t, I highly suggest this practice. We all have stuff. A lot of stuff. We get into the cycle of buying more new stuff and getting rid of old, good stuff. A great resource called The Story of Stuff is a narrative about our consumerist society. You should check it [...]

My Resolution Non-Solution
2011reviewfeature

As the year comes to a close, I reflect on my New Year’s Resolution of 2011 to not buy new clothes for an entire year, but to purchase them from second-hand stores only. For anyone that has known me this year, this was easier said than done. It was in February, when I got my new job as the Sustainability [...]
