For Christmas I received $50 cash, so my plan was to visit some second-hand stores and see how far I could go with it. I shall call it my “50 Dollar Quest” mini-series and it will span into multiple posts until my money has been spent.
Store #1: Treasures of the Heart, Conway, SC
When you visit this store on 16th Avenue in Conway, SC, you will most likely find more than just treasure, you will find a blessing. Treasures of the Heart is a store with many incoming donations and an encouraging purpose. All sales from the store benefit patient care for the local Mercy Care hospice, a non-profit organization. If you don’t already know, hospice includes a range of health and comfort care services for people with life-limiting illnesses. In most cases, these people have refused, or are otherwise ineligible for curative measures such as surgeries or advanced medical treatments.
The Treasures of the Heart store offers a good selection of clothing for women and men, as well as accessories, housewares, books, and furniture. Organization is accomplished by color, size and style – always very helpful. Pricing is probably the best I’ve seen in the area with shirts and sweaters for $3 each, denim for $4 each, purses for $2 each and dresses for $6. The book selection is immensely impressive and current, but the houseware selection seems cluttered and dated. However, I can only imagine how many people donate vases and coffee mugs.
The store’s purpose heavily outweighs most other stores that I have visited. Not only do you leave with a warm, fuzzy feeling for purchasing items, but the same feeling applies when you donate, knowing that the proceeds help patients in hospice care in the local area.
For this visit, I purchased one medium size brown purse and a black shirt for a total of $5. Now I have $45 left.
On a side note, apparently, students from Coastal Carolina University visit this store often for costumes for their theatre productions. Such a great idea!
If you go: Treasures of the Heart, 1227 16th Avenue, Conway, SC – 843-488-0906. Open Tuesday-Saturday 10-5:30pm.
