As a part of my journey, I decided to start from the beginning, so I found a checklist of clothes that women should always keep in their fashion wardrobe. These basic items are standard, classic and timeless pieces that every woman should own. I scoured the internet and looked up a few reliable sources, such as Elle, Glamour and Lloyd Boston. Then I combined the lists and checked to see if my own closet contained these items. If any these items were not in my closet, I added them to my future shopping list.

12 Essential Wardrobe Pieces

After reviewing several various lists online, I settled on the following pieces that I would consider essential to any woman’s wardrobe.

#1 – Little Black Dress – I have a couple casual cotton black dresses that could work, however, I will have to be on the hunt for a more classic one this year.

#2 – Evening Clutch – I do own one of these, which I remember getting for about $3 on clearance at Target.

#3 – Business Handbag – a nice bag to carry all your work essentials.

#4 – Comfy Jeans - I have several pairs, but I always love a new (or rather old) pair of jeans!

#5 – Long Black Coat – Two years ago I invested in a winter business coat from Old Navy. Perfect for those brisk days at work.

#6 – Pearls - Pearls are classic and never go out of style. Every woman should own a pair, which can be dressed up or casual.

#7 – Boots – Tall and Short - boots are great for work and for play. They are versatile with jeans, skirts and leggings.

My Essential Shopping List

I don’t own the rest of the 12 essentials, so here they are as a part of my “green” shopping list this year. I’m not expecting to find these items the first time I shop at a second-hand store, but they will be on the list.

#8 – White-Button Down Shirt – something that goes with everything from dress pants to jeans.
#9 – Black Pumps – just an essential item, especially for working women.
#10 – Little Black Dress – do I really have to explain?
#11 – Long, Lightweight Scarf – a great accessory to spice up anything you are wearing.
#12 – Black Pant Suit – you never know when you need it for a job opportunity or a business meeting or a dinner.

2) Evening Clutch – I do own one of these, which I remember getting for about $3 on clearance at Target.
