2009: The Year of Being a Better Shade of Green

// December 23rd, 2008 // No Comments » // Green Living

After reading Sustainable Dave’s blogs and tips, I feel inspired to make a better effort in my own life.  I am a Recycling Coordinator and I probably generate a fair amount of trash.  We put out our trash every other week, which is not bad, but I think we could do better.

I would like to challenge myself this year to be a better shade of green.

Let’s start with GREEN goals for 2009:

1) Start backyard composting. (I promote this at work and need to start it myself, I plan to blog about my experiences)

2) Use the SIGG. (I half use my SIGG and need to use it fulltime)

3) Ban the use of Styrofoam. (this will be the biggest challenge)

4) Create more art. (anyone have a hot glue gun?)

Sustainable Dave Inspires Me!

The average person generates about 1600 lbs. of garbage a year, which equates to almost 4.5 lbs. a day.  However, somewhere in LA, a man named Sustainable Dave and his family have only generated about 35 lbs. of garbage in one year!  This is an inspiring accomplishment.

Most people do not think about their garbage or their environmental impact. Dave proves that anybody can reduce, reuse and recycle everything, as long as they are conscience of their purchases.  That to me, is the hardest part of the environmentally green impact game.  I have learned that every purchase I make is part of a cycle.  When I buy a product, a message is sent to the corporations that says, “I want that!”  Its easily called consumption or supply & demand.  So, the thing to do is buy products that will reduce my environmental impact.
